The Other Shore
“But what should be is not necessarily the truth”
The Other Shore by Gao Xingjian is an acting exercise that was later turned into a play. It follows a group who are traveling to the mysterious “Other Shore.” Gao tells the reader and audience not to think so deeply about the show and to focus on their immediate reaction to the show rather than to try to make some deeper meaning.
The play focuses on the idea of identity as well as herd mentality and how the balance between community and losing yourself can be very thin. The play aims to shatter illusion so that a person can see themselves and the world more clearly.

Spine
A “spine” is a distillation of text that is meant to help highlight what lines and ideas that I found important while reading the play. Pulling lines and organizing into a structure helps me to clarify what I truly think the play is about.
